Kan Zaman means literally: once upon a time…. atmosphere and The appetizers include the famous tahina (a sesame paste) and baba ghanouj (paste of aubergine) of course served with hot Egyptian pitta bread and along with different kinds of salads. The main menu has all those different types of Egyptian dishes you can imagine , including Melukhia (a vegetable similar to spinach) with rabbits, Hawawshy (pitta bread filled with minced meat) or pigeons filled with burghul (granulated wheat), and the famous stuffed vine leaves. Melukhia is a historical story. It was intended to be cooked for the kings only. Hence, the name Melukhia means "for the Royals". During the reign of the Fatimid Caliph Al Hakim Bi-Amr-Allah prohibited Melukhia and Egyptians faced tough penalties. Reports prove that Egyptians were flogged and beaten in public for trading or consuming Melukhia.
Kan Zaman serves also breakfast. Whether an omelets , plain or with cheese , the traditional pitta bread , different traditional cheese types and dips like the white feta cheese with tomato. If you are more into sweets in the morning, try the Om Ali dessert along with your coffee or tea which gives you the energy for a long day full of interesting sight seeing. published August 31, 2007 |
