Felfela Restaurant & Take Away
downtown

In the heart of downtown into Hoda Sharawi lies the Felfela Restaurant. Once you are inside the restaurant you are in a different world. The grotto is half-lit with a somewhat kitschy interior: long wooden tables, pictures on the wall illustrating traditional Egyptian life and famous characters, aquariums and plenty of colored light bulb and glass paintings. Since long it is a favorite restaurant among tourists and locals alike. Don't be surprised it you find it crowded most of the time.

From the menu you can choose different kinds of salads; famous is the yoghurt salad and baba ghanouj (eggplant with tehina). Fuul (fava beans) in various types, all sorts of taamiyya (fried fava beans), vegetable tagen (vegetable stew fresh from the oven), shashouka (egg dish with tomato and spices), lentil soup and the traditional stuffed vine leaves are good veggie dishes.
Stuffed pigeon, chicken, kebab and kufta are for meat lovers. All come with home made pitta bread. Ice cream and Om Ali, rice pudding topped with nuts and raisins serve as a dessert.
Felfela has a very good fresh lemonade and serves beer.

Around the corner in busy Talaat Harb the Felfela eaterie offers all of the same dishes in addition to the famous koshari, a dish made of rice, pasta, chickpeas, lentils topped with fried onions, tomatoe sauce and a chilli/garlic sauce.
Prices here are very reasonable. The procedure until you get your food is a bit complicated since you first pay your dish at the cashier, find your food counter and line up to receive your dish, which you can eat there (if there is place) or take away in a plastic bowl or wrapping.
