Bayt Al Suhaymi - Islamic Cairo

Among the most important example of Cairo traditional architecture are private houses. Bayt al-Suhaymi is a vivid example. It was first built over substructures dating back to the 10th century in 1648 by Sheikh Abdel Wahab El Tablawi. A substantial addition was made to the structure in 1796. Sheikh Al Suhaymi, a professor in Al Azhar was the last owner of this important monument.

Located near Bab El Futouh and Bab El Nasr, in El Darb, Al Bayt El Suhaymi is 350 years old. A grant offered by The Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development allowed the documentation, restoration and conservation of Bayt Al Suhaymi, whose actual surface is 2000 square meters. Arab art of the 17th and 18th centuries is perfectly represented in the different ornamentation of the ceilings and the floors paved with beautifully designed mosaics, impressive mashrabiyas and wooden joined paneled doors as well as exquisite inscriptions.
