Luxor is the capital of the Luxor Governorate. The city has an international airport. Rail services run frequentlty to Cairo in the north and Aswan in the south.
Built on and around the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes, Luxor is commonly described as the "world's greatest open air museum". The Temple of Luxor, built under Pharaoh Amenophis III stands right in the center of town. Other highlights are the Mummification Museum and the Luxor Museum with relics found at the Theben temples and the necropolis. The Karnak complex lies also within the vicinity of the modern city and across the River Nile is the West Bank with its monuments, temples and tombs, the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens .
Luxor is a buzzing city. Take a stroll through the bazaars, take in the vivid colors and the dazzling aromatic blend of spices and perfumes. It is easy to get around in Luxor . Common means of transportation in Luxor and similar to those in Aswan include the horse carriages. Be aware that the horses are not meant for journeys to the West Bank. A bridge allows the crossing by vehicles - or enjoy the public ferry service, which takes you across the Nile to the West Bank or one of the more expensive speedy motor boats. A felucca ride at sunset is always worth an experience. Luxor is the base either as a starting or finishing point for Nile cruises.
